This edition is dedicated to Elizabeth Daskarolis, whose birthday was yesterday. She has taught us so much about how to love, live life full out, give thanks, stay curious, laugh often, and be there for others. Happy Birthday! Χρόνια πολλά και ευτυχισμένα! Να τα εκατοστήσεις! May you live to be 100!

1.

40

Days and forty nights. Top 40. Life begins at. Forty acres and a mule. Jesus in the desert. Lent. And yes, it’s the atomic number of zirconium, but it’s also the number of editions of Greece Is the Word that we’ve published to date. So, to celebrate this milestone, the first two readers who send us video clips (no more than ninety seconds long) briefly introducing themselves and telling us why they love all things Greek will get their choice of either a bottle of Kleos Mastiha Spirit (that bottle costs, wait for it... forty dollars) or an Iliada Kalamata Extra Virgin Olive Oil Tin shipped to them. Opa!

2.

AND THE NOMINEES ARE

We are receiving nominations and are eager to announce the very first winner of the Antonios Kounalakis Award in the next edition. Know someone deserving of the award? Please go here to nominate that person right now. Thank you!

3.

DO YOU WEAR YOUR PEPLOS PINNED OR BELTED?

“So you can see that ancient Greece was not just one big ‘toga party,’ and not just because the toga is a Roman garment, not a Greek one. As with any culture in world history, Greek dress was about expressing social and cultural values as well as ‘looking good.’”

4.

WHAT GRADE WOULD HOLLYWOOD GET IN A CLASSICS COURSE?

Peter Meineck, Professor of Classics in the Modern World at New York University, reviews Greek and Roman mythology scenes from films including 300, Clash of the Titans, Black Panther, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Wonder Woman, and Hercules.

And here’s a perspective on why Ancient Greece continues to influence the entertainment industry as a whole.

7.

MAN OF GOD

“Exiled unjustly, convicted without trial, slandered without cause. Man of God depicts the trials and tribulations of Saint Nektarios of Aegina, as he bears the unjust hatred of his enemies while preaching the Word of God.”

Also, the Hellenic Film Society is screening A Simple Man. You can see a trailer and get all the info here

8.
